WASHINGTON, DC— In the latest show of momentum for the movement to reform the Supreme Court, more than 50 Pennsylvania state and local elected officials today announced their support for Court expansion, a proposal to add four seats to the Court to restore balance.

The signers include state senators and representatives, city councilmembers, and mayors from across the commonwealth. The endorsing officials signed a letter to the Pennsylvania state party. The letter reads, in part: “This Court represents an existential threat to the very democracy it is sworn to uphold as it threatens many long-standing rights and beliefs to which we adhere. Fortunately, a constitutionally valid solution exists that would immediately restore balance to the Court. That solution is to add four seats to the Supreme Court. Promises and policies to protect fundamental rights and to enact progressive change are empty promises if the illegitimate 6-3 supermajority on this Supreme Court is given the last word.”

In Congress, Supreme Court expansion is supported by three members of the Pennsylvania delegation: Reps. Madeleine Dean, Brendan Boyle, and Summer Lee.

The local Pennsylvania leaders join elected officials in Georgia, Illinois, North Carolina, and Washington state who have previously announced support for expansion.
